Dont Let People Hold You Back Weve all been there, havent we? You know, staring down the barrel of what could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Part of us is telling us to  go for it; to  invest every morsel of energy into making it work. Run Forest, run! The other part is telling us not to be so ridiculous; err on the side of caution, dont risk everything for something that could be nothing. Now, I know its important to be a responsible adult, but Im also a big believer in taking chances and  pursuing  what makes you happy; lifes too short not to. Unfortunately the latter is a lot easier said than done, thanks to not only your own nerves and hesitations, but also the negative influence of others.  No matter where you are, sooner or later youll run into someone who tries to  break your hope and bring you down. If holding you back was a sport, theyd be elite. Say nay to the naysayers Even if naysayers in our lives are notorious for dampening moods and we know what theyre capable of, its terribly hard to resist second-guessing ourselves every time they work their magic on us.  Before you give into self doubt, try to understand where their negativity is coming from. In most cases, it will have absolutely nothing to do with you or your opportunity, and everything to do with them. Jealousy Weve all heard about  Tall Poppy Syndrome.  Run a simple Google search on  any high achieving celebrity and it wont take long to notice the trail of trolls  dragging their names through the mud. When people are insecure inside, they like to drag others down around them; misery loves company. If someones trying to hold you back from  taking a huge step into the unknown, are you sure they arent just  doing it  because they dont want to see you get ahead and achieve greater things than them? Fear Some people are so scared of what could go wrong, that they never give themselves a chance at getting things oh-so-right. People who hold themselves back for this reason are likely to project their damning views on other people. These people live life afraid, and shut themselves off to amazing possibilities. Regret Others will try to warn you away from risky opportunities because theyve had a bad experience in the past or theyve been burned in a similar situation. Their fear has been realised; their confidence and daringness to dream ended up costing them money, dignity and a long list of other things.  They made a scary decision and it backfired; that doesnt mean youll suffer the same fate. If everyone lived  by other peoples warnings, no one would ever venture outside of their comfort zones and achieve great things. If youre really serious about pursuing your dreams and advancing to new heights in your career, youll need to think carefully about how you nurture  your ambition. Here are my three top tips to help you stay on  an optimistic track: 1. Dont give too much away You should feel proud to project your  passions and pursuits to the world,  but remember, the  more information you give  negative people, the more ammunition theyll have to throw against you. If you believe in yourself, just back yourself. Dont open yourself up to  unnecessary mockery or doubtful speculation; itll only bring you down. 2. Hang around like-minded individuals Positive people who like to transcend boundaries and better themselves, are way better comrades for boosting your drive. Surrounding yourself with people who pump you up will be extra valuable in helping to reiterate why youre pursuing the amazing things on your horizon. 3. Dont put too much pressure on yourself Think about Steve Jobs. We all know of the public entrepreneurial plight he suffered before making it as a mastermind inventor in the technology space. If he had have given up after his first failure,  life for us all would be so different. Dont put too much pressure on yourself; if you take a leap of faith and it backfires, then so be it.  At least you tried and wont live life wondering what if.

What Options Are Available with Student Loans Student loans remain a big concern for high school students, college students, and graduate students. They become an even bigger concern when the loans need to be repaid. In the US, household debt continues to rise unabated. In Q1 2017, the outstanding balance on household debt increased for the 11th consecutive quarter, as it topped out at $12.73 trillion, up 1.2% from Q4 2016. Compared to 2013, household debt has advanced by 14.1%. What is even more alarming is that the total debt level at the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008 was $12.68 trillion, and now it has exceeded that and is growing vast. The rising importance of student loan debt as a component of overall household debt is growing. Consider that in Q1 2017, student loan balances added an additional $34 billion in debt. Current State of Student Loans A report from August indicates that Americans now owe more than $1.4 trillion in student loan debt, with some 44 million borrowers across the country. This statistic is alarming, given that the total value of credit card debt in the US is significantly less than that. According to the figures, the average student loan debt for a 2016 graduate was $37,172, up 6 percentage points from 2016. Student loan delinquency rates are rising, now at 11.2% for students who have not paid their debts for 90 days or more. This indicates that an increasing number of students are defaulting on their debt, because they simply cannot afford to make these repayments. The average repayment amount on student loans is $203 per month, a substantial figure for recent graduates to repay. Student loan debt is broken up into different types of loan programs, notably the following (as at the end of Q2 2017): Perkins Loans account for $7.9 billion with some 2.6 million borrowers FFEL loans account for $320.5 billion with some 15.7 million borrowers Direct Loans account for the lion share of student loan debt at $1,003.3 billion with some 32.1 million borrowers Workable Solutions for Student Loans Whether you’re a high school student, a recent graduate, or a young adult looking to attend college, you will want to know about all your options when it comes to student financial aid. Several popular options are available, including federal government grants to help you pay for your tertiary education. One such option which has gained traction with students around the US is the FAFSA option â€" Free Application for Student Aid. This application is designed to assess your eligibility for student aid. There are many different types of student loans currently available to students. With FAFSA, your income level does not factor into the equation. First of all, it is 100% free to apply for FAFSA, and this should be done through the official portal. In fact, the majority of colleges across the United States use these applications to choose students for non-federal student aid. You get to access a low interest rate loan and this will actually help you to establish a solid credit history, and boost your credit profile. With FAFSA applications, college admissions officers will understand that you are serious about your studies and this could bode well for your eligibility for admission. The entire process can typically be completed within half an hour. Students who complete their applications earlier than October 1 will not stand a better chance of receiving loans earlier, but it’s certainly preferable to have everything lined up well in advance. According to the terms and conditions of FAFSA applications, it is now necessary to submit 2 years’ worth of tax returns, not one as was required previously. There are numerous benefits to these types of loans: For starters, no payments are due until you have graduated from school, or you have attended less than 50% of the time. Grads should set sights on Fortune 500 Companies Grads should set sights on Fortune 500 Companies Question from Reader: I am writing to you in regards to my daughter, Kendall. Shes a grad from the University of Tennesseeâ€"Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts in communications and a minor in business administration. She is currently pursuing her MBA from the University of Phoenix in Memphis, Tenn., and will be completing this month. In 2012, she secured a job at Methodist University Hospital as an EKG monitor tech while she was pursuing her MBA. Now that she is near completion, what steps does she need to take to get into the field of human resources, starting with recruiting or compensation? She had one interview with the compensation department, but was not chosen for the position. Advice from Dana: I’m going to answer this question in a way that is relevant to any individual who is starting out a new career. Regardless if entering HR, sales, marketing, operations, etc., these are all BIG departments that have many sub-segments. Within HR, Kendall’s interests may be in recruiting or compensation, however, the key is to learn as much as possible about HR in the first few years, minimally. Therefore, here are my top recommendations: Kendall should aim for the largest Fortune 500 company in her geographic target area. Why the biggest? First, Kendall will have credibility on her resume vs. a small or medium unknown name that others, later in her career, won’t recognize. It will show that she can work for big, complex organizations, learn world-class processes, and work for and with experts. Kendall should enter as a generalist. In the case of HR, titles to aim for may include HR generalist, HR assistant, HR coordinator, etc. This way she will learn all of the various sub-segments within HR or may find that she likes being a generalist and simply expands her scope of responsibilities during her career. Think about the future. In five years, when Kendall determines she wants to go into compensation only, wouldn’t it be more valuable to the future hiring manager that she has been a generalist and sees the big picture? She will know how all of the pieces work together. Plus, as a generalist, Kendall may find that she does not want compensation, which is super analytical, but instead wants recruiting, which has a lot of people interaction. Or neither! Kendall should learn advanced techniques about the job search process, not just interviewing. As a hiring manager for 30 years, I have the perspective of a hiring manager on the other side of the table. I teach at multiple universities, including post-graduate courses, and I offer much more than the on-campus career placement center. There are many other excellent resources such as other books, webinars, videos and free blogs on the web.
